European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently announced a new visa policy that will streamline the process for Indonesian citizens to enter the European Union. The new policy allows Indonesian nationals on their second visit to the EU to obtain a multi-entry Schengen visa, easing travel restrictions and promoting long-term connections between Indonesia and the EU.
The announcement was made at a joint press conference with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at the Berlaymont Building in Brussels. Von der Leyen highlighted that the visa policy aims to facilitate not only travel but also investment, education, and cultural exchange between the two regions. This move enhances the people-to-people connections pillar in the EU-Indonesia strategic partnership, emphasizing the importance of building bridges between the citizens of both regions.
President Prabowo welcomed the deepening of EU-Indonesia ties and emphasized the significance of trust and shared values in fostering long-term relationships. He expressed Southeast Asia’s view of Europe as a key player in global stability and a leader in various aspects of modern life. Prabowo reiterated Indonesia’s commitment to working closely with Europe beyond economic cooperation, focusing on shared values and a common vision for the future.
Furthermore, President Prabowo expressed hope for the completion and signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in Brussels, illustrating Indonesia’s enthusiasm for closer collaboration with Europe. With the implementation of the new visa policy and the expected signing of the CEPA, Indonesia and the European Union are ushering in a new era of strengthened bilateral relations characterized by increased openness, strategic partnership, and mutual benefits for their citizens.
