Dorong Penambahan Kapasitas Penyeberangan di Dermaga Merak

Transportation Crossing Capacity Needs to be Increased, Bambang Haryo Says

During the time of community gatherings and tourism, people require crossing transportation to Sumatra. Bambang Haryo Sorotit, a member of the House of Representatives (DPR), acknowledged the smoothness of the crossing from Java and expressed appreciation for the Ministry of Transportation, GAPASDAP, and ASDP, as well as the Police, for their success in handling the homecoming transport. He expressed his desire to see the return transportation from Bakauheni.

He revealed that out of the 72 available ships, only around 28 ships are regularly operational, and five ships operate at emergency docks, as the Merak Port currently only has seven regular docks. This situation causes a majority of the fleet to not operate optimally during passenger surges.

The limited number of docks is identified as the main reason for the low ferry crossing capacity. BHS emphasized the need for a thorough evaluation by regulators and crossing operators, including PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry with the Directorate General of Land Transportation and the Directorate General of Sea Transportation of the Ministry of Transportation.

He explained that the addition of docks will significantly impact increasing the operational capacity of ships and reducing vehicle queues, especially during the Eid holiday transport period. He also projected an annual increase in crossing traffic of about 8–12 percent, along with the potential increase in vehicles due to the connectivity of toll roads in Sumatra.

Furthermore, he stressed that logistic transportation should not be compromised in managing crossing flows as it can affect goods distribution, inflation, and national economic growth.

In conclusion, BHS urged the immediate follow-up evaluation through the construction of additional regular docks that are safe and suitable, and not solely relying on emergency docks, which are considered suboptimal in terms of safety, comfort, and public service facilities. According to him, the addition of docks should be implemented promptly as an anticipatory measure for the crossing surge in the following Eid holiday periods.
