President RI Prabowo Subianto recently bestowed the title of National Hero on ten figures during the commemoration of Heroes’ Day 2025 at the State Palace in Jakarta. This award was based on Presidential Decree No. 116/TK/2025 regarding the bestowal of the National Hero title. Among the ten names honored was the late Tuan Rondahaim Saragih from North Sumatra, who was recognized as a National Hero in the Armed Struggle category. He was also known as the “Napoleon of the Bataks” for his fight against Dutch colonialism in the Simalungun area and its surroundings in North Sumatra in the 19th century. Tuan Rondahaim Saragih Garingging, born in 1828 in Simandamei, Sinondang, Pamatang Raya, hailed from the noble Partuanon Raya family. In 1876, he was officially appointed as the 14th Great King of Partuanan Raya, a traditional kingdom with significant influence in the Simalungun region. Tuan Rondahaim strategically united various small kingdoms in Simalungun to resist Dutch colonization, including Siantar, Bandar, Sidamanik, Tanah Jawa, Pane, Raya, Purba, Silimakuta, and Dolok Silou. One of his major triumphs against the colonizers was the attack and destruction of the Dutch military base in Serbelawan, symbolizing the resilience and fighting spirit of the Simalungun people under his leadership. Throughout his reign, Partuanan Raya remained the only kingdom in Simalungun that resisted Dutch conquest. Tuan Rondahaim became the only Sumatran king who was never captured by the Dutch until his passing in 1891. His consistent, resolute, and unyielding leadership style earned him respect and obedience from his people. Five years after his death, the Dutch returned to force his son, Sumayan Tuan Kapoltakan Saragih Garingging, to acknowledge Dutch authority in Simalungun. This led to Dutch control over Simalungun lands for plantation purposes in 1900. In recognition of his anti-colonial efforts, Tuan Rondahaim received the Order of Merit Star honor from President BJ Habibie as per Presidential Decree No. 077/TK/1999 on August 13, 1999. His name also graces the Tuan Rondahaim Saragih Regional General Hospital in Pematang Raya, North Sumatra, and a street name in Pematang Siantar.
