President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship programs, such as Free Nutritious Meals (Makan Bergizi Gratis / MBG), People’s School (Sekolah Rakyat), and the Merah Putih Village/Urban Cooperatives (Koperasi Desa/Kelurahan Merah Putih / Kopdes), are viewed as “express lanes” designed to expedite poverty eradication efforts. These initiatives have the potential to generate numerous job opportunities and promote economic independence among the population.
During a recent press conference, the Head of the Poverty Eradication Acceleration Agency (BP Taskin), Budiman Sudjatmiko, emphasized that the aim is not just to alleviate poverty, but to empower individuals and foster economic self-sufficiency. He compared the government’s approach to a game of football, where the impoverished are the players being equipped with skills, intelligence, proper nutrition, and economic opportunities to score a “goal” of poverty eradication.
The Sekolah Rakyat program, which provides boarding-based education, aims to break the cycle of poverty, while initiatives like MBG and Kopdes Merah Putih bring economic benefits to entire communities. These programs are expected to create millions of jobs, particularly benefiting farmers, SMEs, and village-owned enterprises (BUMDes).
Deputy Head of BP Taskin, Nanik S. Deyang, highlighted how these programs offer tangible hope for independence to impoverished households. By removing children from limiting environments, boarding schools encourage aspirations, while MBG’s operations support local producers and businesses, creating value effects throughout the supply chain.
Kopdes Merah Putih plays a crucial role in eliminating expensive middlemen from supply chains, ensuring fair prices for essential goods like LPG cylinders and fertilizers. Additionally, the cooperatives provide access to affordable credit, liberating individuals from predatory lending practices and offering financial support on more favorable terms than traditional banks.
Overall, these government-led initiatives are not only addressing poverty but also empowering individuals, creating job opportunities, and promoting economic prosperity within communities.
